My Heart Bleeds As Australia Burns. We Are Safe.
Rambling On… 17 January 2020
It’s the start of a new year and decade. What are your plans, do you have some?
*****
Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes, Christmas wishes and New Year wishes.
Happy New Year to all of you, too.
I’m so, so sorry that I haven’t been around.
Our life has been so crazy we haven’t had time for anything other than working and sleeping.
I’m sure you’ve all heard about the horrific bushfires burning their way across Australia. While fires are natural to our country for rejuvenation, these fires are the worst that have ever been.
15.6 million acres of Australian land has burned. Just to give some clarity to such an impossible number, this is a map of Australia overlaid over the US map showing all the fire locations. Australia really feels like it is burning.
Dozens of people have lost their lives, including some brave volunteer firefighters, and at least half a billion animals have perished. More animals will end up dying of starvation and it breaks my heart.
My heart goes out to all of those who have lost their loved ones and their homes.
I also give my undying pride and gratitude for those brave souls fighting the fires.
Yes, we’ve helped out by giving money to charity and wherever else we could.
Mallacoota which is on the eastern tip of Victoria and close to the New South Wales border, if very familiar to me. I’ve been camping there many times. It’s about eight hours’ drive from where I live and was such a picturesque town surrounded by bush, gum and eucalypt trees and so much wildlife. There are a lot of estuaries with lots of beaches. This town has been wiped out and so many, many more.
My family and I are thankfully safe and sound.
What makes me absolutely furious is that some of these bushfires were deliberately lit. There was a news accounting that a nineteen-year-old, volunteer firefighter allegedly started seven fires in the Gippsland area (near Mallacoota). To me this asshole has committed murder and should be charged accordingly. Being a firefighter and well aware of the destruction then knowingly starting fires isn’t involuntary manslaughter in my eyes. However, not all the fires were arson. Some of them were started by lightning strikes.
Climate change also has a lot to do with the massive fires because of less rainfall and higher temperatures, but that’s just my view.
Besides working my ass off to get my own work done, I’ve also been helping my man with his new business.
He’s been so inundated with clients wanting quotes, as well as working, he’s nearly been literally bouncing off the walls. My hubby is normally laid back, with a calm personality and usually nothing phases him. I’ve never seen him so stressed.
In just two weeks he did forty quotes for jobs as well as worked every day and then he was trying to price jobs and sent the quotes out to customers. His hard work is starting to pay off as he has about 3 weeks of confirmed work booked.
I’ve been helping him enter the quotes into the software and anything else I can to take some of the weight from his shoulders.
Once he’s got a handle on the bookkeeping software and teaches me, I’ll be helping him with that too.
I hope you’re all well and are looking forward to a new year and decade.
Stay safe, healthy and happy.
